Music
Therapy is aimed towards therapeutic and developmental aims. Through
the process of making music together, significant achievements can
be made in the following areas:
Communication
Verbal and non-verbal communication is crucial to assure development
and a continuing mental health. In music therapy the client will be
listened to and will learn to listen. He / she can gain confidence
to use his / her own abilities most effectively in order to make rewarding
relationships with others.
Social Skills
Music therapy sessions may promote awareness and tolerance of others.
It enables clients to relate positively to others in group or individual
situations and reduce challenging behaviour. The shared music making
will offer a safe framework to explore opportunities for sharing,
taking turns, being in charge and accepting leadership from others.
Emotional
Music offers a positive and creative means of expressing feelings
that for whatever reason cannot be put into words. This area of work
will be particularly important for people who have experienced bereavement,
anxiety or abuse and people who have emotional disturbances or display
challenging behaviour.
Personal Growth
In the emerging therapeutic relationship and the creative musical
dialogue, key areas of personal growth can be addressed such as individuality,
self-awareness, confidence, initiative, creativity and choice.
Developmental Work
Clients can be supported in progressing through developmental stages
e.g. developing auditory, tactile, visual awareness; reaching, grasping
and manipulation of instruments; attention and concentration.
