SINGING
FESTIVAL
The Primary Schools' Singing Festival is an annual, non-competitive
event that started in 2000, with the aim of encouraging, developing
and celebrating singing. For many schools, it has become an important
part of their annual music programme. Up to 1000 children take part
each year in a series of regional workshops that culminate in a final
Gala Concert at Richmond/Wimbledon Theatre at the end of the spring
term. The concert includes items from individual schools, regional
songs sung by groups of schools and music sung by everyone together.
INSTRUMENTAL FESTIVAL
Building on the success of the Singing Festival, the Instrumental
Festival is also very popular. Ensembles from a number of primary
schools meet together in the summer term. Each group prepares a short
programme to play at the event. All the players also work together
under the direction of Peter Currie, an experienced professional conductor,
to rehearse a piece that he composes especially for the event, to
accommodate the variety of instruments and playing levels involved.
The event culminates in the first performance of this piece, which
is quite a feat given that there are over 150 players who have never
played together before.
PERCUSSION PROJECT
This KS2 project was set up in 2000, with the aim of giving whole
classes the experience of playing together in an instrumental ensemble.
The Trust has an entire class set of fully chromatic tuned percussion
instruments, from small glockenspiels to large xylophones, which means
that children can learn and play together, experiencing the fun of
performing in a large ensemble and exploring the elements of music
at first hand. The project is currently fully booked, but we are looking
at developing and extending this work. For further information, please

Johnson.
